Warner Bros. is looking for another star to join Aquaman and Dune. The actor is in final negotiations to star in the studio's live-action Minecraft movie, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Jared Hess, Napoleon Dynamite director, will direct the project based upon the popular video game.
Mary Parent, Dune producer, and Roy Lee will co-produce. Jill Messick will receive a posthumous production credit for her work in developing the film before she died in 2018. Jon Berg, Cale Boyter & Jon Spaihts serve as executive producers. The video game hails from Sweden's Mojang Studios, with Mojang's Lydia Winters and Vu Bui also producing the film.
Minecraft, which launched in 2011, lets players create worlds and structures using blocks. The game was a huge success and reached 100 million users within just a few years of its launch. In 2014, Microsoft bought Mojang for $2.5 Billion.
Warners has been working on a project based upon the game for years. Shawn Levy, Rob McElhenney, and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney have been attached to direct.
MINECRAFT
Gaming movies have been hot in recent years. 20th Century launched a hit franchise with Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy last year and Paramount had success with its Sonic sequel earlier in the month.
Momoa and Warners are releasing Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom in March 2023. This film is the sequel for Aquaman, the 2018 film that grossed $1 Billion. Momoa is repped by WME and Edelstein Laird. Sloane Offer, UTA and Sloane Offer rep Hess.
