Unconditioned stimulus (UCS): A stimulus that naturally or automatically triggers a response.
Example: A dog salivates at the sight of food. The sight of food is the UCS.
Unconditioned response (UCR): The unlearned naturally-occurring response to the UCS.
Example: A dog salivates at the sight of food. Salivation is the UCR.
Neutral stimulus (NS): The object with which the experimenter is trying to get a response.
Example: The experimenter rings a bell every time the dog’s food is brought. The bell is the NS, as the dog would have no natural response to it.
Conditioned stimulus (CS): The neutral stimulus (NS) becomes the conditioned stimulus.
Example: The bell was neutral, but after the bell was paired with food, the dog now associates this bell with food. The bell is now the CS.
Conditioned response (CR): A response to a stimulus that is brought about by learning. The UCR becomes the CR.
Example: The dog salivates at the sight of the bell. The dog now associates the bell with food and, therefore, salivates whether there is food or not.
