If That Doesn't Fit Your Bill

Quick note: To use mods while playing with friends, you will need to create a server or use LAN. "Minecraft Realms" doesn't support mods.

How to make your own 'Minecraft: Java Edition' multiplayer server, or join a friend's

Servers are the basic building block of "Minecraft's" multiplayer mode. Anyone playing together will need to be on the same server.

There are thousands of Minecraft servers out there that you and your friends could join to play together. See the section below to learn how to join a friend's server, or a public server. These servers will be shared with many other people that you don’t know.

If just you and your friends want to have a private game, you can create a Minecraft server for free. Just know that it takes some work, and whoever makes the server will need to have a good computer with a fast internet connection. You might also consider one of these other options.

These are the steps to take to join an existing server of "Minecraft Java Edition" or to create your own multiplayer server.

How to join a friend's 'Minecraft: Java Edition' server or a public one

If you wish to join a server that a friend made or one you found online, there are thousands of public Minecraft servers. All you need is the correct IP address. While joining a public server will allow you to play multiplayer Minecraft, it will require sharing the server and any other players who have access to the server.

These public servers can't be customized because they're maintained and made by someone else. They probably won't work with most mods you use.

There are many servers available, so you can be sure to find the one that suits your needs.

Once you have the IP Address of the public server that you desire or your friend's Minecraft server:

1. Select "Multiplayer" from the menu.

2. Click "Add Server".

3. Enter the host server's address in the box "Server Address" and click "Done." This could be an address on the Internet or a URL.

4. Wait for the server's connection to occur. Then, select the server from the list and click "Join Server."

This is how you connect to a server already in place. Here's how to create your server.

How to make your own 'Minecraft Java server'

Important: The steps below show how to set-up a server on Windows 10. However, the steps will be nearly identical for both Macs and Linux computers.

1. First, ensure that Java is installed on your computer. Java can be downloaded and installed free of charge from the Java website. Java SE Development Kit is also required for Mac users.

2. Launch a web browser of your choice and navigate to minecraft.net/download. Scroll down and select "Java Edition Server."

3. Next, find and download Minecraft server software. Put it somewhere you'll find it. The file will have the.jar extension.

4. Create a new folder on your computer and name it whatever you like, then place the .jar file you downloaded inside of it. This is where you'll keep all your server files.

5. Next, you'll need to create a plain text document. Right-click the folder and select "New," followed by "Text Document." Name the text file "start.txt."

Quick note: You can create a.txt file on a Mac using the TextEdit app. Linux allows you to use the terminal's "cat" command.

6. Navigate back to the Minecraft server download webpage. Copy the command text which is:

Notice that the numbers at end of this article may not reflect the latest version "Minecraft".

7. Copy the command string into your start.txt text.

8. Within the string of command text, you'll see the words "minecraft_server.1.16.5.jar." You'll need to rename that portion of the text "server.jar." This means that the new code line will now read:

9. This line of code allows you to change the RAM allocation on your server. The more RAM you provide, the faster your server will run and the less stress it will put on your computer.

The RAM is determined by two numbers at the beginning of the code. These are the RAM amounts in megabytes. By default, it's set to 1024MB of RAM, or one gigabyte (GB).

For example, a server hosting five or more players must have at least 2GB RAM. You can adjust this code by changing the code:

In most computer programming situations, one gigabyte will equal 1,024 megabytes.Emma Witman/Insider

10. Click File, then Save As ...". From there, you can choose "Save as type" from the drop-down menu. Select "All Files(*. Name the file "start.bat"

11. Delete the "start.txt” file.

12. Double click the "start.bat" file to run it, opening a black command prompt window that will close automatically when the .bat file is complete.

13. You'll see some new items in the server folder, including a "eula.txt" document, short for "End User License Agreement." Open the document and replace the line of code stating "eula=false” with "eula=true."

14. Run the start.bat file once more. You will have to wait longer because your server's universe is being generated at this point.

Technically, your server is ready to fire up now, and you'll also see a few new files in your server folder, including the "server.properties" file where you can customize your game.

However, right now your server is only accessible to devices using the same internet connection as you. You'll have to set up port forwarding to open up your Minecraft server to users outside your local network.

There are a few ways to set up port forwarding. Instructions specific to your router are available here. Once you have it setup, give your friends the IP address so they can join.

Here's how to get started exploring your new server while you wait.

How to join your own Minecraft server, using the computer running the server

1. Launch Minecraft while your server is open and running, and select "Multiplayer." 2. Select "Add Server" in the bottom-right corner. Under the "Server Address," simply put the number "0."

You can always access your server from anywhere.Emma Witman/Insider

How to use a network server to play "Minecraft", together with people connected via the same internet connection

This is a great way to play with your siblings, roommates, or friends in the same house. LAN servers, also called local multiplayer servers, let you play together with anyone on the same Wi-Fi or ethernet network.
Minecraft Servers

Here's how to launch and join a local multiplayer game:

1. One of the players should launch their own game world and go to the pause menu. There they'll select "Open up to LAN."

2. Select the game mode and allow cheats from the menu. Click the "Start LAN World" button.

3. The menu will close, and the player is shown a five digit "port" number. This number should be noted down. If it has disappeared, press T to open a chat box and locate it again.

4. The other player or players in the same network should launch their Java game. However, rather than jumping into a world, click on the "Multiplayer" option from main menu.

5. "Minecraft", will automatically start searching for games on the network. When the right world appears click "Join Server".

6. If it does not find the server, the players can click "Direct Connection." This menu will allow you to enter the IP address for the computer hosting your server.

This is an example of what it might look.

7. Click "Join Server."

How to use a premade multiplayer server with 'Minecraft Realms'

It's all about mods for a lot Minecraft players.

You can opt to "Minecraft Realms" for a monthly fee if non-modded Minecraft does not suffice or if you find the idea of creating your own server too difficult.

Realms is a service where Mojang (the company that makes Minecraft) will build and provide you a server. It doesn't require you to make it or run the server, which is great if time, bandwidth or computer speed are not available.

Here's how to use Realms.

Sign up for Minecraft Realms

1. Open the Minecraft Launcher app, and log into your Mojang or Microsoft account if you haven't already. Play to launch Minecraft: Java Edition. After the main menu loads, choose "Minecraft Realms."

Open the "Realms” menu. Emma Witman/Insider

2. If you don't already have one, you can request a free Realms Trial. Click "Subscribe" to continue. You will be taken on a Realms signup screen. This form will allow you to create an account. Be sure to have payment info handy, even if you're signing up for the free one month trial.

You will need your payment details, even for a trial.

How to create a server for Realms

1.

Once you've signed up for Realms click the "Java" button to relaunch Java. Now, select "Minecraft Realms from the main menu." To customize your first Realm, click anywhere on the screen.

2. Give your Realm a name and a description. Click "Create" to save the changes.

3. Set your world type preferences and structure generation preferences. If you want to recreate an existing world layout, enter a seed. Click "Create world" to finish.

Invite other players to your Realms server

Depending on whether you have a free trial or the higher-tier Realms subscription, you'll be able to create a world accessible to two players, or up to 10 players. Here are the steps to invite a friend to your realm.

1. Open Minecraft from the launcher and select "Minecraft Realms" in the main menu.

2. For realm configuration, click the wrench icon located right of your realm's name.

3. Select "Players," on the top-left side of the "Configure a realm" screen.

4. Enter the Microsoft or Mojang gamertag for the player you want to invite under "Name," then tap "Invite player."

Now, wait for the player's acceptance of the invitation. They will be notified via the main menu the next time they launch Java.

You can also grant "Operator" status to invited players, which allows them to access certain in-game commands. Operators cannot invite or remove players.
