If 120 frames-per-second displayed on the screen of your gaming laptop is twice better than 60 frames-per-second so surely eight times as many frames are eight times better isn't it? That's the reason behind the latest super high-refresh rate panels offered on Alienware gaming laptops. GAMES The Dell subsidiary is now selling its M17 R5 17-inch laptops, as well as x17R2 17-inch laptops that feature brand new panels. It's claimed to be the fastest in the industry.
The panels are only able to display 1080p resolution at that incredible refresh rate, but that's likely to be the best. After all, you'll need to play an application that can produce nearly 500 frames per second for you to experience the benefits - switch off ray-tracing, and opt for Minecraft-grade textures, I suppose. The new panel comes with a 3ms response time and is compatible with NVIDIA GSync and AMD FreeSync, depending on your GPU configuration. The upgrade is an extra $300 over the base 165Hz screen, which equates to 95 cents per hertz.
I have seen 120hz screens as compared to 240hz screens in trade shows and they were both enough for me to believe that even some ultra-fast gamers could benefit from these screens. But what if you double the speed? It's not going to improve actual gaming performance I'm not sure even for eSports pros with Special Eyes. However, the absurdity is part of the appeal of gaming hardware in the end.
