Minecraft: New Marketplace For Community Creators

Minecraft Marketplace for Community creators By Steffan Powell Newsbeat reporter

10 April 2017

Minecraft hopes to make it easier for players to get hold of the content created by fans and community creators.

Many users already build intricate worlds to explore, thrilling adventures to play, or even alter the game itself to provide brand new experiences within it.

Now , they'll be able sell their content directly via the game itself, in the new Minecraft Marketplace.

Producer John Thornton told Newsbeat that the platform was created to assist entrepreneurs in starting businesses.

Until now people who create adventure maps, character skin packs or experiences to play in the game haven't been allowed to sell them directly to other players.

Only official Minecraft content could be sold this way however, it hasn't stopped some players from making a living from the game.

James Delaney, is founder of the group of Minecraft creators dubbed Blockworks and has created a successful business despite the restrictions.

He is delighted to welcome the Marketplace.

"Hopefully it's the start of regular and steady income," he tells Newsbeat.

"In the past, we relied on commissions to bring into our businesses, and you don't know when that will be."

He is the responsible person for 62 creators who work in 20 countries.

Their main source income comes from creating Minecraft-based content for educational and marketing campaigns.

James "got very interested in" making Minecraft maps with his online friends and realised a few years later that there was a chance to earn money.

He adds, "At least now we know there is an audience for our content."

"If it's successful, we know we can keep working on a more regular and stable basis.

"Also it's content we can decide to create instead of being told to make it, so we have creative control over that."

The marketplace will be available on both Pocket and Windows 10 versions of the game.

This means that the majority of Minecraft players around the world estimated at 120 million, will have access to the game. However, console gamers won't.

John Thornton states, "Our goal is to try and connect creators and players."

"On Pocket edition it can be tricky to get content onto devices, so it's difficult for creators to display their content with the world.

"By connecting creators to the marketplace it'll make it much easier for users to discover something they want to play with, buy it and download it onto their devices."

Players will have access to them for free, which means users can still create community experiences.

Producers hope that viewers will choose to pay for the content that is simpler to find.

"If you are planning to share content at the moment you need to place it on the internet and inform people where to look for it," says John.

"You can utilize existing social media platforms to accomplish that, but it's way more effective if we bring this into the game by itself.

"Players can interact with things they love in the context of the game they play."

He hopes that the game will help James to establish an effective business.

The Minecraft team is launching a new service, which has nine creators around the world.

The adventure maps skin packs, adventures, and other skins will be monitored by the central Minecraft team to ensure they're suitable for the game's audience.
