The Raspberry Pi Foundation has released an experimental version of its Linux-based Pixel OS for Windows and Mac PCs. The OS was initially designed to run on Raspberry Pi hobby boards. It comes with the Chromium web browser, a suite productivity and coding tools, and the OS. "We asked ourselves a question that was simple: Why would we ask people to buy Raspberry Pi hardware to run Pixel? MINECRAFT SERVER LIST the founder Eben Upton wrote in an article on his blog.
Built on top of Debian the OS is lightweight enough to run on old machines, provided you have at least 512MB of RAM. "Because we're using the old i386 architecture, it can run even on vintage machines such as my ThinkPad X40 (above)," Upton said.
Although it's simple to use, Upton recommends backing up any important data. After downloading the image you can burn it to an DVD or USB stick and then allow the boot process to begin. This is usually done by changing the BIOS of your computer or pressing the "C" key when you start the Mac.
After that, it will start the OS with no need to install anything. You can boot from an USB stick to have the option of running "with persistence." This means that any changes or files made will be saved for the next session. If you'd prefer to play around and begin again next time, you can run without persistence or reset it. As mentioned, you get a full suite of applications and a web browser, but unlike with the Pi version there's no Minecraft or Wolfram Mathematica because of licensing issues.
There are numerous lightweight Linux distros for older computers (including Debian), or you can install Neverware that turns your laptop into an Android tablet. However the Pi Foundation supplies a lot of useful Linux apps with Pixel, and is aiming to make it as easy to use as is possible. By porting it to desktop machines, Upton also feels "we can more easily see where [the operating system's] weaknesses are and work to address them [on the Pi."
The group thinks it's a good idea for schools (where the Raspberry Pi already has a large foothold) to aid students in learning programming and other applications. They could learn at school, and then use the persistent boot option to continue at home using the same setup.
The Pixel OS is still in its experimental stage and does not run on all machines. Upton stated that his modern Mac couldn't recognize the image as bootable on his machine. They'll release more updates in the coming months however, you can try it out by pressing an announcement post.
