Minecraft Ban Reports Investigated By Microsoft

Minecraft ban reports investigated by Microsoft By Kevin Rawlinson BBC News

11 March 2015

Microsoft Minecraft, the owner of Minecraft, is investigating reports that suggest the Turkish government is planning to ban the game. The BBC knows.

A Turkish Family and Social Policies Ministry study found that the game promoted violence, according to local media.

There were conflicting reports about what actions the government was planning to take as a result.

Some claimed it would ask the court to impose a ban on the game. minecraft Others said it would ask Microsoft to make modifications.

According to the Haberturk newspaper, the ministry's report said: "Although the game can be seen as encouraging creativity in children , by building houses, farmlands and bridges mobs of hostile creatures must be killed in order to protect these structures. The game is built on violence.

'Social isolation'

The report said some children might confuse Minecraft with the real world and be misled into believing that torturing animals will not cause pain, according to the newspaper.

The report said it was based on the experiences of a nine-year-old , and suggested that playing Minecraft could cause "social isolation".

Haberturk reported the department of legal affairs at the ministry was instructed to take the first steps to ban Minecraft.

According to Fatih Oke (a spokesperson for the Turkish Embassy in Washington DC), a ban is "out of the question".

Mr Oke stated to Christian Science Monitor: "There will be no ban.

"The game is not banned and will not be banned.

The Family and Social Policy Ministry does not have that kind of authority to ban any product.

"I know that this is what has been said in the Turkish media However, it's not true.

"The ministry is able to only deal on complaints.

"In this instance, I am told there were numerous complaints from parents regarding Minecraft and its influence on children.

"The ministry's function is to spread awareness."

The government can't prohibit the game in a unilateral manner however it could persuade a court.

While Turkey is not known for its ban on computer games certain websites have been taken down in recent times.

In the past year, access to both Twitter and YouTube was temporarily blocked, while Facebook was required to block some pages that were believed to insult the Prophet Muhammad in January this year.

'Creative freedom'

Mojang, the company that produces Minecraft under Microsoft's umbrella, did not comment on the reports.

He added: "Minecraft is enjoyed by many players in a variety of ways.

"While many people enjoy the artistic freedom Minecraft and its tools offer however, some people are more interested in the chance to explore the world that is completely free of boundaries and share thrilling adventures with their friends.

"We encourage players to collaborate for success whether they're building, exploring or exploring.

"The world of Minecraft is a dangerous place: it's inhabited by terrifying, genderless monsters that appear at the dark of night.

"It could be necessary to defend against them in order to survive.

"If people find this level of fantasy conflict disturbing, we recommend that they use Creative Mode or to allow the Peaceful setting.

"Both of these options will stop monsters from appearing everywhere in the world."
