Inhabitat's Week of Green: Wind Farms and Algae Power and an Airplane made of Hemp

Every week, our friends from Inhabitat summarize the week's most fascinating green developments and clean technology news for us -it's the Week in Green.

Highways are huge dark, dark surfaces that soak in lots of sun. xrplay It would be more sensible to make them solar-powered. That's the idea that designer Daan Roosegaarde was thinking and is now working to make it possible. Roosegaarde collaborated with Heijmans Infrastructure to install solar-powered glowing lines on an expressway in the Netherlands. It was a great success and is expected to be extended to other regions of the country. Also on the renewable energy front, Masdar is building a 50-megawatt wind farm for the Sultanate of Oman, making it the largest wind farm in the Gulf states region. The wind farm will generate enough clean energy to power 16,000 homes and prevent 110,000 tonnes (121.254 tons) of carbon dioxide from being burned annually. In the UK, Primrose Solar is working with Solarcentury to build a 48-megawatt solar farm in Portsmouth. They hope to create the most eco-friendly ground mounted solar farm in all of the world. Are you convinced that algae is just green slime. It's not It can power everything, from the lightbulb to an entire city. Here's a list of the most impressive algae-powered inventions that could revolutionize the world.

A few years ago, BMW, Daimler and scientists at the Technische Universitat Munchen announced plans to collaborate to develop an affordable and secure electric car. This week the Visio.M 2 seater that weighs in at just 800 pounds, will be shown to the public for the first time at the eCarTec trade event in Munich. In other green transportation news, last week Inhabitat was among two teams who completed the challenge of driving 834 miles on just one tank of diesel fuel in the 2015 Audi A3 TDI, proving that it is possible to travel from Albuquerque to San Diego without refilling the tank. According to a couple from California the world's first hoverboard is now available. The couple claims that they've created a working hoverboard that makes use of electromagnetics to lift around an inch above the ground. Vello Bike, a high-performance folding bicycle, was created for urban commuters. It requires just one push to fold and roll back into position. This makes it simple to transport the bike on public transportation or to store it in a storage area. In aviation news, Canadian company Hempearth is building the world's first airplane made from hemp. The plane is scheduled to be ready for flight next year.

While 3D printing has lots of potential in the design world, it also poses some problems for law enforcement officials because it could allow people to make their own guns at home. A 28-year-old Japanese citizen was sentenced to three days in jail last week for 3D printing. He was found guilty of making two guns in his home and sharing a video showing how others could do it. Inhabitat was in attendance at New York City's first ever gathering of geeks. From 3D-printing pens to tablets that have built-in projectors, check out some of the most useful tech innovations displayed.

3D printing is already well-established in the field of aerospace and medical technology, however it's only just beginning to be used as a viable construction method. At Maker Faire Rome, the World's Advanced Saving Project unveiled the first portable 3D printer that could be used to build homes from clay, mud and fibers. The group plans to bring the technology to the remotest areas of the world. In other green architecture developments design duo Micaela Colella and Maurizio Barberio have created plans for a prefab wooden home that has an innovative steel foundation that can be totally recycled. French designer Philippe Starck recently teamed up with the manufacturer of prefabricated homes Riko to construct a brand new solar and wind-powered home. The house that is two stories tall, produces 50% more energy than it consumes.

With Halloween coming up, many of our readers are pulling together amazing costumes for their kids and themselves, but few top this dad's amazing LED stick-figure costume that makes his daughter, Zoey, look like a glowing stick-figure Minnie Mouse. If you're still stuck for Halloween costume ideas and would like to dress in something techy take a look at our fantastic images of human iPhones Androids robots, and Minecraft characters here.
