Linux is a multi-tasking, multi-user OS.
the idea of making free software to ask for user's comments, and suggestions to improve computer programs began with Richard Stallman, an employee of MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Later on, he created the GNU project, the goal was to produce a software that's free to use, distribute, and modify

Linux Torvalds created Linux in 1991. While studying at the uni of Helsinki, he used Minix, a version of UNIX OS, Linux along with others sent their requests for modifications and improvements to Andrew Tanenbaum. However, Tanenbaum felt the changes were not needed. bcuz of this, Torvalds decided to create LINUX. He took into account users' comments and suggestions to improve it. He created a clone of UNIX and released it free on the internet.
For the most of the 1990s, only CP experts can use the early VER of LINUX OS. But as programmers offered to help, the no. for Linux versions increased as people started writing programs for Linux. Linux became popular because its free and stable.
