It shouldn't come as a surprise that children are spending more time on their smartphones during the COVID-19 outbreak. How can you be sure they're balancing remote learning, social media, and Fortnite? Microsoft's Family Safety app is the solution. The announcement in March of the free application was made public and is now available to download for anyone who owns an Android or iOS device.
The app allows you to set up custom time limits for specific Android, Windows and Xbox applications, including video games like Minecraft. You can choose to extend your child's time limit by 15 or 30 minutes, or one, two, or three hours. The Family Safety app can also be setup so you get an email whenever they want to buy something through the Microsoft Store, and set up various web and search filters within the (now Chromium-based) Edge browser.
If you're just looking to keep an eye on your little one, the app can be configured to send a weekly 'activity report email that provides a breakdown of the time they spend on their screens by device and application. The goal is to alert you when there's a problem and to start conversations with your family members. The app also offers tracking of your location that allows you to know exactly the place your family members are located in real life. Minecraft In the future, Microsoft 365 Family subscribers will also get alerts when a family member enters or leaves a specific location. The premium plan will also offer some sort of 'drive-safety habit tracking feature, too, starting in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK.
None of these tools are innovative, and they're ineffective if your family spends most of their free time on Macs, iPhones and iPads. If every member is invested in the Microsoft ecosystem, though it could be a decent dashboard or first point of contact, at the very least, to ensure they're living a healthy life both on the internet and in the real world.
