Minecraft Awarded GameCity Videogame Arts Prize

Minecraft was awarded GameCity videogame arts prize By Leo Kelion Technology reporter

29 October 2011

Minecraft is the winner of a brand new art award for computer games.

The GameCity videogame festival ended in Nottingham and the winner was announced.

The title is the work of an independent Swedish company, Mojang. In an open environment players build objects from blocks.

The game was selected over other releases including Valve's Portal 2, Southend Interactive's Ilomilo, and Game Freak's Pokemon Black.

"It's an honor to be compared to those games," said Markus Persson, Mojang's founder.

"Winning this award helps us to create Minecraft the best game it can be."

Nearly four million people have already bought the game on the internet, despite it being still in beta. The game will be released in a formal way in the coming month.

"It just wasn't like other things... it seemed to have an expanding life of its own. Minecraft servers It had an organic quality," one of the judges, Ed Hall, told the BBC.

"It's easy and addictive, and there's an element of beauty in the work you do."

Confident in their culture

Iain Simons (GameCity's director) said he was delighted by the decision.

The festival is currently at its sixth year anniversary. Over that time he says that he has noticed a rise in the average age of gamers, and more women drawn to the event.

He said, "There is a much greater number of gamers."

"They have become more mainstream and have been more confident in their culture and this award, and the festival, is very much about examining that confidence."

The phenomenon is linked to the growth of smartphones. The popularity of the advanced games that are made possible by today's smartphones is partly due to the increase in the use of smartphones.

The possibilities for designers are certainly increased by advances in computer processors and graphics chips, as well as other technologies. However, Mr Simon is not convinced that the developments affect the designers' status as artists.

"I believe technology is a red herring. What technology is driving is the ability of games to appear more realistic. He said that it was possible to look like a triple-A blockbuster.

"I do not believe that they are art in and of themselves. We wouldn't have the ability to weep over Bambi without that. It's not about photography."

The judges of the contest seem to agree and admit they chose the most basic-looking title available.

The jury comprised 13 members from a variety of backgrounds, including Dr Who actress Frances Barber, Labour MP Tom Watson and the artistic director of London's Southbank centre, Jude Kelly.

Enhancing life

The merits of Minecraft were not immediately accepted by everyone. Nitin Sawhney (composer) was also on the panel and was dissatisfied with the music.

But ultimately neither the look of the game or its music proved fatal to its chances.

"[We askedwhich one we thought was head and shoulder above the other? Does there have any merit to the game that can enhance your life and enjoyment beyond the game? Would it help you see the bigger picture on the world? said Mr Hall.

"Could a computer game be seen as something that wouldn't be mocked in the future?"

Minecraft includes a variety of traditional gaming elements, including night-roaming monsters, or the chance to play multiplayer online battles.

It was selected due to its ability to enthuse gamers and its mood.

Mr Hall said, "It's a broad definition of art that is available."

"But computer games are definitely artistic. There are pictures and stories that entice you, concepts that can keep your mind occupied for hours, and a total package that keeps you coming back for days."
