Minecraft Ban Reports Investigated By Microsoft

Minecraft ban reports investigated by Microsoft By Kevin Rawlinson BBC News

11 March 2015

Minecraft owner Microsoft is investigating reports that suggest the Turkish government is planning to ban the game according to the BBC reports.

According to local media, a study by the Turkish Family and Social Policies Ministry found that the game encouraged violence.

There were conflicting reports on what the government's plans to accomplish.

Some speculated that it would ask an appeals court to ban on the game. Others said it would request Microsoft to make changes.

According to the Haberturk newspaper the report of the ministry reads: "Although the game can be viewed as encouraging creativity in children , by building houses, farmlands and bridges, mobs [hostile creatures] must be killed in order to protect these structures. In essence, the game is built on violence."

'Social isolation'

The report stated that some children may confuse Minecraft with the real world and be led to believe torturing animals isn't causing any pain, according to the newspaper.

The report was based on the experience of a 9-year-old. It suggested that playing Minecraft could cause "social isolation".

Haberturk said that the ministry's legal affairs division was directed to take the first steps toward bans on Minecraft.

According to Fatih Oke (a spokesperson for the Turkish Embassy in Washington DC), a ban is "out of the possibility".

Mr Oke said to Christian Science Monitor: "There will be no ban.

"The game isn't being banned and will not be banned.

The Family and Social Policy Ministry isn't able to prohibit any product.

"I believe that this is what was said in the Turkish media, but it's not true.

"The ministry is only able to deal with complaints.

"In this case I have been told that there were numerous complaints from parents about Minecraft and its impact on children.

"The mission of this ministry is to raise awareness."

The government is not able to ban the game unilaterally however, it can convince that a court.

Although Turkey isn't known for banning computer gaming, there have been some websites that have been shut down in recent times.

In the past year the same year, both YouTube and Twitter were temporarily blocked. Facebook had to block certain pages that insulted the Prophet Muhammad in January.

'Creative freedom'

A spokesperson for Mojang which produces Minecraft under the Microsoft umbrella after Microsoft purchased the game for $2.5bn (PS1.68bn) in September 2014, declined to comment directly on the reports.

He added: "Minecraft is enjoyed by many players in a variety of ways.

"While many people enjoy the artistic freedom Minecraft and its tools provide, others prefer the chance to explore the world that is completely free of boundaries and share exciting adventures with their friends.

"We encourage players to join forces and encourage them to work together in order to achieve their goals, no matter whether they are building or exploring, or simply adventuring.

"The Minecraft world can be dangerousbecause it's home to terrifying, genderless monsters who come out at the night.

"It may be necessary to defend yourself against them to survive.

"If people find this level of fantasy conflict upsetting We would suggest they to play in Creative Mode, or to enable the Peaceful setting.

"Both of these options will stop monsters from appearing everywhere."
