James Whitfield Thomson is an American novelist. A former sales executive and U.S. Navy navigator in Vietnam, he lives in Natick, Massachusetts. He received a grant from the Massachusetts Council for the Arts to pursue his writing career. His first novel, LIES YOU WANT TO HEAR, is the result of an impromptu workshop with Andre Dubus. In this interview, he talks about his influences, how his work is different from other books in his genre, and why it is different.
The novel takes place in a family of five, including an alcoholic father and a wife with five children. It is a satirical look at the social and political world of America, and Thomson's wit and charm make readers laugh and cry. A harrowing experience in this town, Thomson's characters struggle to survive and grow after a traumatic experience. While the novel is a surprisingly dark novel, it is also an uplifting read.

The author lives in a Victorian farmhouse outside of Boston with his wife, Elizabeth, and their five children. Their children, James and Sarah, are all grown up and their lives are filled with joy and adventure. The novel's characters are also portrayed as flawed, but sympathetic, and the characters are likable. But the most fascinating part is that Thomson's characters are completely realistic. Despite its dark side, the novel is a compelling read.
