A few months after its big debut at this year's E3, Minecraft has finally appeared on the Android Market, much to the delight of cube fans and time-wasters everywhere. With this new, Pocket Edition app, Mojang hopes to faithfully recreate the Minecraft experience on mobile platforms with a particular focus on the game's imaginative side. Version Alpha 0.1 will let players explore randomized worlds, invite their friends to play in their worlds and save multi-player environments to their mobile phones. Users can also play with 36 different types of blocks using the convenience of their touchscreens. The game is currently only available for Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. Mojang plans to launch it "in the near future" for other Android phones. It's available for purchase now for $6.99. You can also grab it at the break or read the full press announcement here.
Say hello to Minecraft - Pocket Edition
Today we're launching the first version of Minecraft - Pocket Edition. MINECRAFT SERVERS The game will be exclusive to Xperia Play for a limited time and released to other Android devices in the near future.
The first version (Alpha 0.1) will concentrate on the creative aspects of Minecraft. We've tried to include features that are compatible with mobile devices while keeping the core Minecraft experience. You can select blocks using the touchscreen, or navigate through them using the circle and square buttons on your Xperia Play device. Multi-player support for the local wireless network is available in the first version. This allows you to create a world of friends and invite them to join. This version includes:
* Randomized worlds
Like the PC/Mac/Linux version of Minecraft we're planning to continue creating the Pocket Edition for a long time, with regular updates. We'd like to hear from the Minecraft community about our latest game, and what you would like to see in future updates.
