We all want to appear beautiful. Let's just say it, we all want to be beautiful. If we all were gorgeous, we wouldn't all be able to stay in our homes and play video games. For instance this writer looks more like an chimpanzee-slime hybrid from Dragon Quest series than a butterfly. Sometimes reality can be very harsh.
Of course, in order to deal with that reality, we all have our preferred MMOs to play whenever the opportunity presents itself -- such as right now, with this week's WRUP. 30tt With the recent success of the quasi-MMO Minecraft, we wanted to know what it was important to have the games they play be pretty. Check out the video below to see our responses and then let us know what you'll be playing this weekend in the comments! Beau Hindman (@Beau_Hindman), is playing a little bit of DIGDIGDIGDIG all day, and I need to prepare for DIGDIGDIG before leaving for GDC. I might get DIGDIG some time to DIGDIGDIGDIGDIG play some Minecraft as well.
Graphics? Nah. It's all about the game.
Brianna Royce (@nbrianna): I look back over my older WRUPs and realize that I am so boring... I'm still having a lot of fun in City of Heroes. I guess I'm trying to get it to dry because I am sure that once Cataclysm releases and my guild is ready to take off! I recently bought an all-new tanker and wow -- now I can remember why I normally prefer controllers.
I'm not sure if I'm a graphics snob as I play a lot older games. I've even thought about trying the new Ultima Online boats expansion. A game needs to have something to offset the ugly, a few bits of nostalgia, stunning strokes of gameplay , or compelling stories. A stunning game that has bad gameplay however? I'm not even giving it a second look.
Edward Marshall: If I have the time, I'll play Fallen Earth.
Graphics aren't a big deal to me. But in the present day and age, I expect better than ASCII at the very minimum.
Eliot Lefebvre - Final Fantasy XIV Naturally. Final Fantasy XIV is my favorite game at the moment. I am currently on a quest for better armor and weapons. It's slow, but enjoyable. I'm also considering spending some time offline to go through my huge collection of console games.
Simple graphics aren't a problem for me, but there needs to be a purpose behind them. Stylized graphics are an entirely different beast from games that just plain look bad. The line between "stylized" and "bad" is a purely subjective.
Greg Waller: I have been focusing all of my time and energy towards WAR lately and intend to keep this trend going throughout the weekend , as my new zealot tackles Badlands through Tier 3. In regards to the bonus question: Eye candy is not a good game make. I can get along with poor graphics, if the gameplay is superior.
Jef Reahard: I will be playing Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock specifically, specifically the song of the song 2112 of Rush, since I experienced the joy of blasting my eardrums live in Atlanta last night. I know music games are all the rage in 2007 but what the hell. If I can manage any MMO, it will be my standard AoC/EQII and an occasional side dish of FFXIV.
Krystalle Voecks (@Krystalle): I'm reinstalling everything after I upgraded my desktop, so I'm anticipating numerous, many, hours of download and installation enjoyment this weekend. Apart from that there's more Vanguard for me, and some time spent with the old Masquerade WoD sourcebooks.
In terms of graphics, let's face it: we love beautiful. One Shots is a fantastic illustration of this. However, I don't believe it's the ultimate goal of a game. Minecraft is a hit because it's enjoyable and lets people express their creativity not because it's visually stunning.
Lisa Poisso (@emused): Nosing around old WoW alts with my husband, deciding on a new race/class combo for Cataclysm. The graphics were not as important to me until I went back to read the original EQ. If EverQuest's graphics were up to match current standards, I'd play it again in no time. But as it is, the graphics are a huge negative.
Patrick Mackey: I'm having some issues with my desktop currently, but assuming it works, I will be playing World of Tanks. I'll be spending some time playing Champions too; I heard that Demonflame was coming out on Friday at PTS.
As a player of StarCraft II on the lowest graphics settings, I'd say that graphics don't really matter. However, Minecraft fails because things aren't visually obvious in that game. The purpose of visuals is to let the player know what's happening in the game, and if the information isn't clear the art-designers have failed.
