A new version of Minecraft designed for classroom use is now available in early access. Minecraft: Education Edition was announced in January, along with Microsoft's acquisition of MinecraftEdu the team which had already been working on tweaking the game for teachers. The upgrade will be made available free of charge this summer, prior to the per-student pricing model is introduced for academic year. As a token of appreciation, Microsoft has promised existing MinecraftEdu customers one year of free access to Education Edition -- presumably it will be available after the trial for early access wraps up.
The Education Edition of Minecraft has some advantages over the vanilla version. Right off the bat, up to 30 students can learn and work together in the same world, negating the need to create a private server through an application like Minecraft Realms. Teachers can create non-player characters (NPCs) to provide a more guided experience, and equip them with web links to let students access additional resources. There's also a chalkboard item to provide instructions, as well as an camera that students can use to take snapshots of their work, building an in-game portfolio in the process.
Microsoft says it's still working on a host of other features that the community has requested. The new interface provides teachers with the ability to map out their classrooms with markers for each student and the possibility of teleporting users (should anyone wander off or make a mistake), and a chat window that can be used to handle class-wide and private chats.
