Why Silicon Valley is betting on making this dystopian sci-fi fantasy a reality



Fortnite is attempting to be more than a video game. This is the latest example of Fortnite bringing experiences to its gameplay. Last year, it hosted music performances from artists such as Marshmello and Travis Scott, as well as three films by director Christopher Nolan.



The metaverse was initially thought of as the setting for dystopian science fiction books in which virtual universes offer an escape from crumbling societies. However, the technology industry has painted a far more positive picture of the concept in recent months. The idea is to create a world similar to the internet, but one that users (via avatars in digital form) can explore of and where they can interact with one another in real time.



Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney was very proud to present Fortnite as a metaverse and as an "social event" when he was a witness in the famous lawsuit against Apple he filed earlier this year. The lawsuit was brought against Apple over the commissions that the iPhone maker receives from app developers. Sweeney's arguments were an attempt to prove that it's more than just an online game, and also to undermine Apple's claim that it's not a monopoly in the sense that Fortnite users can choose to play it on devices other than iPhones and iPads.



Epic however, in the opposite tried to position itself as one of the millions of apps that are available on Apple's App store that are subject to its severe restrictions and commissions for in-app purchases. (A verdict in the case is still in the process of being determined.)



Fortnite isn't the only game that heavily rely on the idea of the metaverse.



One of the more notable examples is Roblox, which features games-within-a-game created by users and has also expanded into television shows and concerts in recent months. Minecraft is owned by Microsoft (MSFT), has also worked on expanding its own metaverse, with the company Reporters Without Borders recently creating an online library inside the game that contains articles that have been censored across the globe.

Big Tech is also more open to the metaverse. The term was mentioned nearly two dozen times during the company's recent earnings call. The social media giant has been exploring for a long time virtual reality capabilities and services for work environments, too and in the workplace - and is looking to move beyond the world of two-dimensional video calls.



For a variety of reasons, the metaverse's full-fledged development is likely to take years before it is possible. However, the gaming industry is leading the charge.
