Coronavirus: Leicester Church Uses Minecraft to Teach Bible to Teens

Coronavirus: Leicester church uses Minecraft to teach Bible to teens

17 May 2020

A church has resorted to Minecraft to teach children about Christianity during the lockdown.

The server was used to recreate Leicester's St John the Baptist Church so that the youth group can have a place for Bible classes.

Josh Young, the organiser, said it was a means to meet younger people "where they are" and engaging with them in a world that they are familiar with.

Virtual reality has also been able to get creative in their lessons.

Mr Young for instance has created an underwater whale to teach the kids about Jonah's story. He also challenged the kids to build boats to find out more about Jesus who calmed the storm.

The youth worker, who is 27 years old, added, "Having a community of young people is really important and that's what I was looking to maintain in the lockdown."

"They aren't able to be friends with their friends, and some of them are struggling at the moment. On Minecraft they can meet, talk and play games without physically being present. It is a tool to engage and build communities.

"Young people are living in an online world and the Bible instructs us to meet people where they are, in their community.

"Jesus challenged the boundaries of what people thought was normal worship, he would be pleased that the church is moving forward."

Around 20 children, aged between 11 and 17, spend two-and-a-half hours on the server each Wednesday.

During that time, they are free to explore the world or pursue their own ideas, but for 30 minutes they're transported to a shared area to complete a Bible-themed mission.

Mr. Young stated that they'd ensured that adults could manage the children's involvement and stop any bad language.

Rosie 15, 15 is one of the teens who joins regularly. "I love it because I can talk to my friends while playing, I enjoy it the same way as going to our regular youth group," she said.

"I thought it was great that Josh transported everyone to the same spot and we held a contest to build the most beautiful boat from Matthew Chapter 8 where Jesus stopped the storm. My team won because we made lightning storm clouds."
