'Minecraft' Studio Wants nothing to be Associated With NFTs

Don't expect to buy the creeper skin as an NFT (non-fungible token) and plug it into your Minecraft server in the near future. Mojang has taken a clear position against the hugely popular game's involvement with NFTs and blockchain technology. Minecraft provides a marketplace where users can sell their creations to others. Mojang states that some companies have recently begun offering NFTs that can be used in connection to the game. There are NFTs that are associated with Minecraft skin packs and world files that people can purchase. The studio claimed it might be possible for players to earn Minecraft NFTs for activities that they completed within the game or elsewhere. Mojang isn't in agreement with any of this.



"Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies result in digital ownership that is based on scarcity and exclusion that is not in alignment with Minecraft values of inclusion and creativity and playing with others," it said. "NFTs don't include all members of our community and create a stalemate of haves and have-nots."



While Minecraft server owners are allowed to charge for access, Mojang rules state that everyone should have access to the same functionality and content. The studio stated that NFTs can result in exclusion and scarcity models that are inconsistent with our rules and the spirit of Minecraft.



Mojang expressed its concern about the speculation-based nature of NFTs and pointed out that some were sold at "artificially and fraudulently overinflated prices." Given that Minecraft has millions of players in its youth It's not an ideal choice for the game to allow NFTs. "The speculative pricing and investment mentality around NFTs diverts attention from the game and encourages profiteering, which we think is inconsistent with the long-term enjoyment and achievement of our players," Mojang said.



The studio and Microsoft the parent company have every reason to be wary of blockchain technology or NFTs. There is a huge protest from the general gaming community against those technologies. Another reason is that the prices of cryptocurrency have plummeted, and the NFT market is drying up.
