Minecraft Says It Doesn't Want Anything to do with NFTs, Blockchain

While some industries are still sussing out their opinions regarding NFTs however, the video game community is stating it clearly: NFTs stand for "No F'n Thanks" in their field.

The latest company to stand against non-fungible tokens: Mojang Studios, the developer of the massively popular video game, Minecraft.

In a statement that was released today on the official Minecraft website, titled simply "Minecraft and NFTs," the company clarified that it would not allow any form of blockchain or NFT integration into its game.

Mojang Studios and Minecraft laid out a few reasons for why they are against NFTs. One reason is that they stated that fake scarcity plays an important part in it. NFTs, also known as non-fungible tokens are basically digital assets stored on a blockchain. To declare ownership of a piece of NFTs, an individual token is created and then linked to a media file.

The statement clarifies that Minecraft does not oppose monetizing, and uses the example of users charging for access to the Minecraft server as an approved use case. However, since NFTs could alter the game's dynamics and give players with monetary means an upperhand in-game the game, the Minecraft developer is opposed to the technology.

"To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy an enjoyable and safe experience, blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated within our Minecraft client and server applications nor may they be utilized to create NFTs associated with any game-related content, such as skins, worlds, items, or any other mods," declares the statement.

The developer also raised concerns about the credibility of third-parties who mint Minecraft-related NFTs, and their tendency to drop projects, and fraudulently inflate prices on NFT aftermarkets.

"No blockchain for block games," as Molly White of the website Web3 is going Great succinctly stated. The website tracks scams, frauds and drama that occur in the Web3 world. This includes NFT projects as well as cryptocurrencies.

As White points out, the value of existing (and illegal) Minecraft NFT projects tanked following the announcement of Mojang Studios' statement. NFT Worlds is another project that has a token associated with it and a token associated with it, saw the value of both the token and its NFT floor prices crater by more than 70 percent.

Minecraft's Mojang Studios is far from the first video game company to be without NFTs. Gamers have said that they don't like the idea of buying NFTs in addition to the video games they already have. And their skepticism towards NFTs has forced the industry to follow suit. Sony just announced Playstation Stars, a loyalty program that rewards users with digital collectibles. These digital collectibles aren't NFTs, according to the company.

"It's certainly not NFTs. Absolutely not. They aren't able to be traded or sold. It's not using any Blockchain technology and certainly not NFTs," Grace Chen, Sony's VP of network advertising and loyalty spoke to The Washington Post.

Mojang Studios did end its statement by stating that they will keep track of the development of blockchain technology to be used in future cases however, leaving the possibility of a future use case open based on the current lack of possibilities. However, for the foreseeable future, it's a win for gamers who absolutely dislike NFTs.
