Mojang has put its blocky feet down when it comes to brands and Minecraft. In an open letter to the community on its site, Owen Hill, the director of creative communications at the company, laid out new guidelines specifically directed at companies, ad agencies and other non-gamer organizations looking to capitalize on Minecraft's vast user base.
For an idea of just how large the base of users is, take a look at the fact that in 2014 the creator Markus "Notch" Persson revealed that the PC version had more than 100 million registered users. It is understandable that brands might be tempted to market their products to a massive number of users. But no more as per the new building promotion guidelines it's no longer legal to build servers or maps to "promote unrelated products in a playable form." What is this? Well, you can put an end to embarrassing promotions like the gigantic working cellphone CaptainSparklez made on behalf of Verizon or Disney creating an interactive map of Tomorrowland to promote its film with the same name. However, if you're a mega fan and you do these sorts of things on your own dime and time, well, that's just acceptable to Mojang.
