Minecraft: Denmark replica disrupted by 'cyber vandals'
7 May 2014
Cyber vandals have destroyed an online Denmark that was created to teach children.
A few pieces of it were destroyed despite a ban issued by its creators the Danish Geodata Agency (DGA) on the use "dynamite".
In the beginning in the area of the start, huge US flags were displayed as well as red, white, and blue "America” signs.
The state-owned agency believes the "vandalism" was meant to draw attention, and said the damage was repaired.
Images showing the changes were posted first to the fan site minecraftforum.net by an anonymous user who wrote:"I Americanlized [sic] this place a bit."
Chris Hammeken, chief press officer at the Danish Geodata Agency, told the BBC: "Only a minor area was destroyed.
"The flags actually appeared right where the players start and I'm sure the people who placed them there were hoping to attract the most attention they could."
Hidden 'dynamite'
"Minecraft's about building and rebuilding," stated Mr Hammeken. He said the incident was part of Minecraft's "nature" of playing.
Buildings were destroyed using virtual dynamite - the usage of which was banned on the Danish server after users discovered it could be detonated if hidden in mining carts.
Mr. Hammeken stated that "it was the players who took care of all the damage and replaced it with green grass, flowers the next morning."
The city was not "hand-built" - the topographic data of Denmark was imported into Minecraft which is available as a download for free on the DGA's website.
Those who download the data are able to upload it to their personal Minecraft server that will give the city with a new look and keep users free from threats.
The replica has already been downloaded more than 220,000 times since the start of the month.

Virtual field trips
The DGA created the model of Denmark to create curiosity in spatial data with a particular emphasis on the education of children.
Its website explains that there are actual addresses in the game. This makes it possible to engage in a discussion on places and their meanings.
The agency has also suggested using the replica as a means to send students on virtual field excursions.
"We've observed that children are more engaged when they have something they know," stated Mr Hammeken. He added that Minecraft is extensively used in Denmark as an educational tool for a long time.
It is unclear who the "vandals" are, or why they were targeted by Denmark.
