DeepWorld is a 2D Minecraft-alike Coming to Mac And IOS

If you threw a bunch of gaming catchwords in a hat and then pulled them out one by one and arranged them in order, you may have an idea of the description for the forthcoming Deepworld. It's a 2D, steampunk post-apocalyptic sandbox game with Minecraft-style creation, and block graphics that open up to a vast and vast game world. Deepworld is almost a game that promises too much to live up to its promises however the developers Bytebin (consisting of three guys who have lots of experience in server architecture, but not quite as much experience in game development or design) understand they're delivering a lot.

However, the version they showed me at GDC last week definitely did not disappoint at least as two characters roaming through the world together. Deepworld's graphics may not appear amazing in shots (they're ... "stylistic", you might say) however, when you travel through more of the world, there's an appeal that cannot be denied. The game's beauty was seen after a shelter was constructed with lanterns and pools of light.

There's a lot of charm in the various mechanics too, though. One of the devs describe the game as "a game based on a sort of scarcity," and that scarcity is a reference to all of the various resources that exist in this initially barren world. When you dig the earth, you'll find lava that creates steam, which can then be stored in pipes and used to power technology. There is a crafting system, but unlike Minecraft (where items need to be found and constructed), the game basically just offers up a menu of what you can construct using the various resources you've gathered.

The interface is also very nice. You can make whatever you like using the cursor on Mac. Minecraft servers While the iOS version is still in development ("There are a few kinks in touch," Bytebin said) It will be possible to "draw" creations directly on the iPad's display.

The biggest problem with Deepworld probably isn't in the game, however: It'll probably be with keeping the servers running. The game is divided into 1200x800 block "zones" and the developers hope to restrict these zones to a limited number of players. They may also charge players to customize or save these zones. But there's a metagame of sorts in "improving the ecosystem" of each zone It's not difficult to imagine that Bytebin could be in problems in the event that the game proves to be extremely popular, in keeping its servers afloat.

Bytebin recognizes the need (and also, the team's experience includes managing large servers for large software companies and they're a fighting chance at least) However, we'll find out for sure how they do when the game goes for an open beta later on this year. Alpha will take place "in just a few weeks" and there's a beta registration form for the game on the market right now. Deepworld looks really fascinating, and it's a title we will probably be proud to have on Mac and iOS.
