Minecraft game includes Ordnance Survey GB terrain data By Matthew Wall Technology reporter, BBC News
23 September 2013
Minecraft, the highly popular game of building and monsters is now able to include precise Ordnance Survey terrain data of Great Britain in its blockwork virtual world.
The game's 33,000,000 players have the ability to create worlds over geographically accurate landscapes covering 224,000 km (86,000 miles) of Britain.
Joseph Braybrook, an intern at OS's Innovation Labs, created the GB Minecraft world in just two weeks.

It makes use of OS OpenData products for free.
Graham Dunlop, OS Innovation Lab Manager, stated that "we think we may have built the largest Minecraft world ever" based on real-world data.
"The resultant map shows the huge potential of Minecraft not just for geography and computer technology-related purposes in schools, but also for the broad range of OS OpenData applications."
Minecraft was developed in 2009 by Swede Markus "Notch", and is an online world composed of cubes of various materials like rock, sand and lava.
Players can collaborate to construct shelters, create things from raw materials, and fight various monsters.
The OS GB world contains more than 22 billion Minecraft blocks.
After downloading the map into Minecraft, players can enter the 3D virtual realm through OS's head office in Southampton. From there, they can recreate real-life features such as Stonehenge or imagine buildings such as Hogwarts castle.
The OS map products include OS Terrain 50 and OS VectorMap together to create an 3D model of the earth's surface that is layered with features like roads, woodlands, and water.
Players can construct their own structures on top of real-world terrain.
As OS is the GB's national mapping authority, its information covers the mainland and its surrounding islands, but it does not include Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man or Channel Islands.
