Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says his firm "definitely won't" follow Minecraft developers in banning non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
As previously reported, Mojang Studios, Minecraft developers, has halted NFT integrations Wednesday because it believes that NFTs have a speculative aspect and scarcity, risks of exclusion, and fraud are against the game's principles.
While the NFT community was highly critical of the move, the crypto-skeptics were overwhelmingly positive.
The company of Sweeney's is responsible for Fortnite, a battle royale game that has become very popular. It's also thought of as Metaverse's platform. Although Epic Games isn’t necessarily pro-crypto and NFTs, its CEO has stated that the company does not intend to force any views on the subject to its players.
Developers should be free to design their games and you should be able to choose whether or not you want to play them. I believe stores and operating system makers shouldn't interfere by imposing their opinions on other players. We won't.
In response to the post, Twitter user Low5ive asked Sweeney if Epic Games' policy on prohibiting "hateful/discriminatory content" differs from this. Sweeney replied that Epic Games makes "editorial" judgments, however NFTs do not currently fall under their purview.
"A store may choose to make no such judgements and instead host something that's legal, or choose to draw the line at mainstream acceptable norms as we do, or accept only games that conform to the individual beliefs of the owner," he said.
Mojang Studios' NFT ban has left NFT Worlds, a project that is based on Minecraft's open-source servers, with a serious issue.
