As it turns out, the server troubles experienced by Minecraft last week -- which led to an unplanned free-to-play weekend- might have served as a perfect marketing technique for the indie world-building game. Fela The free weekend, along with Penny Arcade publicity, might have made its players thirsty for a legitimate version of the game. According to a Minecraft sales tracking website the game was downloaded 25936 times in the 24 hour period after it was brought back on Wednesday, netting its creator, Markus Persson, somewhere in the neighborhood of $350,000.
Although sales have slowed after the servers' rebirth, they remain significantly higher than prior to the free weekend. This is a substantial amount of money, but it's nothing when compared to the money players of the game have lost as they invested their entire lives in DIY projects. We just want to remodel our marble floors in our palace and complete the diamond tower, and dam up this lake and then we're done. We're serious!
