Minetest, the Minecraft-like voxel game engine (and an easy game that is included) comes with a new version out with Minetest 5.4.0 and is worth a second try.
As we've already mentioned during the release Candidate stage of the release, this version makes it much easier to momod small mod packs, as well as complete games. Minetest was a game that allowed players to browse and download mods directly from the game. However it now downloads all dependencies mods require - making it much simpler to find what you require and load it into the game. It's no longer a matter of downloading one mod and then having to find all the pieces it requires.
The built-in game "Minetest Game" also went through some enhancements. Although it's not much in itself but it can be an excellent platform to showcase the engine and extend by adding mods. With Minetest 5.4.0 it now includes crafting guides, five more wood variations as well as ambient sounds for lava as well as active furnaces, new translations and numerous bugs fixed. So it continues the steady and slow build-up into something a bit bigger out of the box.
Other features include the ability to change the cross-hair whenever you point at objects, free-binding mouse buttons names for players now have semi-transparent backgrounds and a caverns option to create flat maps and the 'place’ and 'fig keys are freely set. There are a variety of bugs fixed, including the inability for players not to access the inventory of other players.

Really great to see this free and open source game engine and game running extremely well. Based on the official server list, it looks like a large number of players regularly play games with Minetest and there are hundreds of players online when this article is published. Wow!
