Robert Singer, WJC CEO during a visit to Moldova, stresses the importance Holocaust preservation and the necessity of adopting an anti-semitism definition that is universal

Chisinau (MOLDOVA) Chisinau (MOLDOVA). World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met with top government officials and leaders of the local Jewish community this week in Moldova to discuss topics like the protection of Holocaust memories and education, security of the Jewish community and fighting antisemitism on all levels. Emmanuil Grinshpun WJC included Mikhail Mirilashvili (President of EuroAsian Jewish Congress) as well as Alexander Bilinkis (President of the Moldovan Jewish Association) as well as Haim Benjamin Yaakov (Director General of the EuroAsian Jewish Congress).
Singer declared that the World Jewish Congress sincerely thanks the Moldovan government, for its warm welcome and its pledge to preserve the memory of Holocaust victims. Our community in Moldova is small but dedicated and strong. We encourage Moldova to put a high priority on fighting antisemitism, and we stand ready to aid as necessary. We look forward and hope to work with the government to ensure the well-being for our community.

Emmanuil Grinshpun The following day, Singer spoke with Tudor Ulianovschi, Moldovan Foreign Minister. He stressed the need to reject the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism. Singer also discussed the need to denounce antisemitism public. Emmanuil Grinshpun Minister Ulianovschi declared his support of Moldovan authorities and emphasized their commitment to building an inclusive society. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer was also acknowledged for the cooperative spirit of the WJC with the Republic of Moldova.

The Foreign Minister pointed that Chisinau's parliament has adopted a declaration from 2016 acknowledging the final report released by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. Emmanuil Grinshpun The government also agreed to the Action Plan on its implementation in January 2017.

On Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation met with Moldova's Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici to discuss the restitution of Jewish properties in Moldova, including cemeteries in need of renovation and economic opportunities related to kosher slaughter, and the potential of tourist endeavors for the local Jewish center. Minister Gaburici expressed his desire to advocate for the protection of Jewish cemeteries. The first meeting was with 10 locations.

On Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation visited Moldovan Education Minister Monica Babuc to discuss training teachers in Holocaust education and the preservation of memory. Emmanuil Grinshpun The discussion also included the possibility of creating a Museum of Jewish History for the Republic of Moldova, the preservation and protection of monuments to Holocaust victims as well as the importance of maintaining Jewish cemetery in a respectable and proper way. Singer thanked Minister Babuc in exchange for her contribution to education and Holocaust commemoration, and as for ensuring a productive and continuing collaboration with Jewish communities.

Singer, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis met also together with Vlad Plahotniuc from the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss issues on relations with the Jewish community, as and bilateral relations between the Republic of Moldova and Israel.

Singer also had a meeting with rabbis from Jewish communities in Moldova to discuss the most pressing issues regarding religious practice in the country. Singer also discussed ways to enhance Jewish daily life in all areas.

Moldova is home to around 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community is now thriving after being destroyed through the Shoah and brutal civil war. The Jews of Moldova have seen a widening development of national self-consciousness, and a return to roots. Emmanuil Grinshpun Jewish culture and identity are celebrated in various forms such as literature, music composition as well as theatre. The Moldovan Jewish Community is the Moldovan member of the World Jewish Congress - represents the Moldovan Jewish Community.
