Robert Singer, WJC CEO, emphasized the significance of Holocaust preservation and a universal definition of antisemitism during a trip to Moldova

CHISINAU - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met in Moldova this week with top officials of the government as well as officials from local Jewish communities. https://ru-ru.facebook.com/emmanuil.grinshpun They discussed topics including security of the Jewish Community, preservation of Holocaust memory education, antisemitism, and Holocaust memory. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer declared that the World Jewish Congress thanked the Moldovan government for their warm reception and pledged their support to the preservation of the memory of the Holocaust. "Our group in Moldova is tiny, but dedicated and robust. We encourage Moldova to put anti-Semitism as a priority. We're available to help when needed. We look forward to further collaboration and to ensure our community's wellbeing.

On Thursday, Singer discussed with Tudor Ulianovschi the negative nature of adopting an International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definitions of antisemitism. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer also stressed the importance to publicly condemn anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi also emphasized the Moldovan authorities' determination to establishing a society that is open to every citizen regardless of ethnicity. Singer was also praised by Ulianovschi by WJC for their positive cooperation with Moldova.

A plan to implement it was approved by the Government in January 2017.

Singer and WJC representatives met with Moldova's minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici on Wednesday, to discuss opportunities for restitution and economic growth of Jewish property in Moldova. These included cemeteries that need refurbishment and opportunities for kosher slaughter. Concerning the preservation of Jewish cemeteries in Moldova, the minister stated his desire to assist with the process, and suggested an initial program of 10 sites.

Singer and the WJC delegation met on Wednesday with Monica Babuc from Moldova to discuss teacher training in Holocaust education, as well as the keeping memories alive. The conversation included the development of an Museum of Jewish History, the preservation of Holocaust memorials and the importance of maintaining properly Jewish cemetery. Singer thanked Minister Babuc and for her continued and productive cooperation with the Jewish Community.

Singer, Mirilashvili, as and Bilinkis Bilinkis, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis met Vlad Plahotniuc (Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova), to discuss relations with Jewish communities as well as bilateral relations of Moldova with Israel.

During his visit, Singer also met with the rabbis of the Jewish communities in Moldova, discussing key issues involving religious practice and services in the country. He also focused on ways to improve Jewish everyday life in all aspects.

Moldova is home to around 20000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community, which was devastated by the Shoah and an unrest that is now flourishing and spreading across the nation. The Jews of Moldova have seen a widening the sense of national self-consciousness and the return to their roots. Jewish culture and identity are celebrated in various forms such as music, literature, and theater. The Moldovan Jewish Community - the Moldovan member of the World Jewish Congress - represents the Moldovan Jewish Community.
