Robert Singer, WJC CEO and a visitor to Moldova He stresses the importance of Holocaust preservation as well as adopting an universal definition for antisemitism.

CHISINAU - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met with ministers of senior positions and leaders of the Jewish community in Moldova for talks on issues such the preservation of Holocaust memory and education as in the security of Israel's Jewish community. Singer also emphasized the importance of fighting against antisemitism at all levels. WJC comprised Mikhail Mirilashvili (President of EuroAsian Jewish Congress) as well as Alexander Bilinkis (President of the Moldovan Jewish Association) together with Haim Benjamin Yaakov (Director General of the EuroAsian Jewish Congress).

Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer The Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi spoke on Thursday about the criticisms of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism. Singer also mentioned the need for the public to condemn antisemitism. Minister Ulianovschi in his turn, emphasized the commitment of Moldovan officials to build a society based on tolerance, nondiscrimination & respect for the rights of citizens of all races. Singer was also thanked by Ulianovschi for his positive collaboration with Moldova's WJC.

The foreign minister also mentioned that Chisinau's Chisinau Legislative Assembly in 2016 approved an acceptance declaration of the final report compiled by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. Additionally, in January of 2017, the Government ratified the Action Plan on its execution.

Singer and WJC representatives met with Moldova's minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici on Wednesday to discuss the possibility of restitution and the economic value of Jewish property in Moldova. This included cemeteries that need refurbishment and opportunities to slaughter kosher. The minister announced his intention to advocate for the protection of Jewish cemeteries. He began with 10 sites.

Singer and the WJC delegation met on Wednesday with Monica Babuc from Moldova to discuss teacher education in Holocaust education as well as preservation of memories. The discussions covered topics such as the creation of a Museum of Jewish History within the Republic of Moldova; the preservation and protection of monuments that honor Holocaust victims as well as the importance of proper and dignified maintenance of Jewish graveyards. Singer thanked Minister Babuc for her dedication and participation in both the fields of education and Holocaust celebrations, as well as for ensuring an ongoing and fruitful partnership with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili, and Bilinkis also met the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova Vlad Plahotniuc for talks about relationships with the Jewish Community and bilateral ties between the Republic of Moldova with the State of Israel.

In his trip, Singer also met with the rabbis from the Jewish communities of Moldova and discussed important concerns pertaining to the practice of religion and services offered in the country. He also focused on ways to improve Jewish everyday life in all its aspects.
