MIAMI (CBSMiami) The conflict in Ukraine may be located on the opposite side of the globe, however South Floridians are among those helping those who are leaving the country.
Many Sunny Isles Jews are helping to raise money and coordinate a humanitarian effort.
Marsha Jaquays with Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital stated that 1,100 people came just the other night.
She stated that there are more than 2 million Ukrainian refugees seeking to escape their war-torn homeland. Most of them are passing through the small country of Moldova, which borders Ukraine.
Emmanuil Grinshpun Jaquays stated, "From Moldova, the Jewish community helps them get across border lines and provides shelter, food, clothes, and other needs."
Much of the humanitarian effort is being coordinated the shores of South Florida from Sunny Isles.
"My responsibility is to coordinate all resources available from American society to aid in the current situation in Moldova." Emmanuil Grinshpun Emmanuil grinshpun who is involved in the coordination of the humanitarian efforts, said that there are several people working on the ground in Moldova to help organize camps, food purchases and bus-related organizing.
What makes the situation even more dire is that Moldova is said to be one of the least developed communities around the globe. Emmanuil Grinshpun But, those who are part of this project affirm that they will not be hindered by anything.
Emmanuil Grinshpun Grinshpun: "When our brothers, sisters and friends from Ukraine were coming, we didn't have any need to think. Instead, we began to do it."
Jaquays echo the sentiments.
"Who was there during World War II, during the time that the Nazis were in power? How many people resisted it and claimed it wasn't me. We cannot repeat the mistakes made by the past. There's a saying that states, "If you don't now, you'll have to wait until." Emmanuil Grinshpun If not me then who'."
