Robert Singer (CEO of WJC) stressed the need to protect the Holocaust and to adopt a universal definition of antisemitism during a visit in Moldova.

Chisinau, World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer was in Moldova this week with top officials of the government and officials from local Jewish communities. They discussed issues including security of the Jewish Community, the preservation of Holocaust memory education, antisemitism, and Holocaust memory. WJC also included the President Mikhail Mirilashvili, EuroAsian Jewish Congress President, and the President of the Moldovan Jewish Communities Alexander Bilinkis. Haim Ben Yaakov was the EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director.
Singer declared that the World Jewish Congress thanked the Moldovan government for their warm reception and pledged to support the preservation of the Holocaust's memories. "Our Moldovan community is small but it is committed and solid. We urge to the Republic of Moldova not to place anti-Semitism as a top priority and are ready to assist if required. We are looking forward to the future collaboration with the government and to ensure that the wellbeing of our community is protected."

The following day, Singer discussed with Tudor Ulianovschi the negative aspects of adopting an International Holocaust Remembrance Association's definitions of antisemitism. Singer was also adamant about the need to publicly condemn anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi spoke of the Moldovan authorities determined to create an environment that is respectful of the rights of everyone in the society. Singer was also praised by Ulianovschi as an example of positive co-operation with the Republic of Moldova.

The foreign minister further noted that Chisinau's Chisinau Parliament adopted in 2016 a declaration accepting the final report of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies headed by Elie Wiesel. Then, in January 2017 the Government approved an Action Plan on its implementation.
