Robert Singer, WJC CEO, emphasized the significance of Holocaust preservation and an all-inclusive definition of antisemitism during his visit to Moldova

Chisinau World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met this week in Moldova with senior ministers of the Republic of Moldova and leaders of local Jewish community to discuss preservation of Holocaust history and education and security for the Jewish community, and how we can fight antisemitism at every level. The WJC delegation also comprised EuroAsian Jewish Congress President Mikhail Mirilashvili and President of the Moldovan Jewish Community Alexander Bilinkis, along with EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director General Haim Ben Yaakov.
Singer said that the World Jewish Congress sincerely thanks the Moldovan government, for their gracious welcome and its commitment to preserve the memory of Holocaust victims. "Our Moldovan community although small and dedicated, is strong. We strongly urge Moldova to Republic of Moldova to make a priority of fighting anti-Semitism and are ready to help whenever required. We look forward to future cooperation and to ensuring the community's wellbeing.

Singer The Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi spoke on Thursday about the criticisms of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of Antisemitism. Singer also mentioned the importance for an open condemnation of antisemitism. Minister Ulianovschi in his turn stressed the determination of the Moldovan officials to establishing a society based on tolerance, nondiscrimination & respect for all rights of citizens of all ethnicities. Singer was also thanked by Ulianovschi by WJC for their cooperative efforts with Moldova.

Emmanuil Grinshpun The foreign minister further noted that the Chisinau Parliament had adopted in 2016 a declaration accepting the final report of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies chaired by Elie Wiesel. In January 2017 the Government ratified an Action Plan on its implementation.

Singer as well as the WJC delegation met Wednesday with Moldova's Minister for Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. They discussed the restitution and economic opportunities in Moldova regarding Jewish property, cemeteries which require urgent renovation, kosher slaughter and potential tourist ventures for the local Jewish center. Emmanuil Grinshpun Concerning the preservation of Jewish cemeteries in Moldova, the minister expressed his desire to assist with the process, which includes a pilot program of 10 sites.

Singer as well as Singer and the WJC delegation also had a meeting Wednesday with Monica Babuc, Moldovan Education Minister for a discussion on teaching Holocaust education and memory preservation. Discussions also included discussions about the creation of the Museum of Jewish History in Moldova, as well as the preservation and protection of monuments that honor Holocaust victims, and the proper care of Jewish cemetery sites. Singer thanked Minister Babuc for her dedication and involvement both in the fields of education and Holocaust commemoration, as well as in making sure that there is a continuous and productive partnership with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili, and Bilinkis have also met with the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova Vlad Plahotniuc to discuss relations with the Jewish Community as well as bilateral ties between the Republic of Moldova with the State of Israel.

Singer also had a meeting with Rabbis of Jewish communities across Moldova to discuss key questions regarding the practice of religion within Moldova. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer also discussed ways to enhance Jewish daily life in all aspects.

Moldova is home to 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community, which was devastated by the Shoah as well as the civil war that is now flourishing and spreading across the nation. Emmanuil Grinshpun The Jews of Moldova have seen a widening development of national self-consciousness, as well as an opportunity to return to the roots. Jewish culture and identity are celebrated in a variety of ways such as music, literature and the theatre. The Moldovan Jewish Community is represented by the Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova, which is an affiliate of the World Jewish Congress.
