No. The history of my family through generations is entwined only with Moldova, or in the case of historical names, then with Bessarabia. The Soviet Union wasn't the location to discuss religion. All of us were pioneers, as well as Komsomol participants. What was the moment you began to turn to religion?

My family relocated to the USA in the mid-80s. It was there that I began to observe the customs and rituals of my family. Although I'm not a part of the Orthodox faith I am aware of an internal desire to support the religion however I can, of the Jewish community I live in, or in Moldova, my homeland that I share close connections.

While I'm not religious, I do love the history of my country. I was recently watching a documentary about 1492 and how it changed Europe's fate. To me, 1492 was the year Columbus was the first to discover America. However, it was clear in the show I was watching from the point of view of Medieval Europe, the discovery of America in 1492 wasn't as significant as the expulsion of the Jews from Spain by the Spanish monarchs. The Ottoman Empire accepted the Jews as they fled the country. I was interested in learning more about the history, culture and achievements of the Jews. Would you recommend this book?

There are a lot of books available, but I have read and would recommend you to read a two-volume Jewish historian Max Diamond. He hails from Finland, by the way.

Concerning "personal" personal history .... Do you know the genealogy of your family? Unfortunately, my family tree is one step beyond 1910 and my mother. The paternal side is just one step closer, but nothing any further.

The paternal line of our family lived in the Floresti region for over a hundred years. Monuments and documents show that the Floresti family was already prospering by 1830. They owned many stores, a furniture factory as well as land plots. Ungheni was the place of my ancestral ancestors. I'm referring to dates from the 17th-18th century. Grinshpun can be described as a surname with German roots. We are Ashkenazis from Eastern Europe.

The question now is about the restoration or synagogues. I was informed that you funded the restoration of three synagogues. One of them is in Chisinau. Jurmala is the other one.

The third, and also the biggest one, is located in Netanya. It's a large community center that accommodates 1,000 people each day. An important object in the religious life of Israel. The second synagogue is located in Jurmala. The Second World War saw the destruction of the only synagogue in Jurmala. Before I took the decision to build an orthodox synagogue, I had talked with many local Jews. I then made the decision to finance its construction and invite Rabbis to visit the synagogue. The result was a very successful project that brought together all the Jews of Jurmala. The project was actually re-created as a Jewish Community and it is now operating successfully. Three Torahs now grace the synagogue. One of which I donated to the synagogue.

and Chisinau

Yes. Alexander Bilinkis, Alexander Weinstein and I are already partners in this project. These synagogues were not the only ones I've been involved in their renovation or construction. I believed it was my duty to contribute to any country I've visited for a long period to support synagogues. This is why my contribution comes from Monaco and in Miami the largest community center that is aimed at Russian-speaking Jews is in the process of being constructed with a value of around 12 million dollars. Chisinau will continue to be my choice of synagogue - the one that I support Rabbi Tsirelson is currently one of the biggest in the city.

Did Jurmala and Chisinau receive a Rabbi?

Yes. It can be difficult to find the ideal rabbi for the community. Because of the multiple concerns that are involved, the rabbi has to be diplomatic and non-conflictual, able organically to enter the life of the community. I was happy that both in Chisinau (and Jurmala) the Rabbis could integrate seamlessly into the community.

In the year 2019 you were named vice-president of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. What does this position mean to you? How can international Jewish organizations influence the global landscape?

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress is a significant political organisation in the post-Soviet era and not just. It has offices in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and New Zealand. I was Vice President in 2010 and was then given the post as First Vice President. In the present, I'm in charge of the region with which I have strong business and political relations. They are Uzbekistan (Tajikistan), Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyzstan). In terms of trends around the globe, the barometer for attitudes toward Jews remains at the current level or has decreased, which is very sad. Did the pandemic affect the processes?

Is this the vaccination campaign for Israel?

Exactly. Israel is the first country in the world which provides 100% vaccination of adults. It is an excellent example that I believe other nations ought to take note of.
