Children to design new national park in Minecraft
Students in Adelaide, Australia, have been invited to design the national park in Minecraft which could then be constructed in the real world.
Students aged nine to twelve were required to create their own designs in the 3D world.
The results could then be incorporated in upgrades to existing national parks around Adelaide.
The government has allocated nearly $10.4m Australian dollars (PS5.4m) to redesign the.
It was determined to find a way to engage young people in its process.
"This competition is part of a project to engage the community asking people of all ages what sort of facilities would encourage them to spend more time in national parks," reads the Natural Resources, Adelaide website that announced the award.
"The State government has set aside $10.4m for parks projects This means that some of the ideas you and your class develop could be put to use."
It added that the only rule is that a design must be possible to be realized in the real world.
"The park's features should be a part of the natural environment, taking into consideration the species of animals and plants living there."
It suggested that ideas could include trails for bushwalking, mountain cycling or barbecue areas, horse riding, picnic areas or something completely unique."
Redesigning slums
There is a growing trend to create more adventurous Minecraft designs.
The Danish government has identified the entire country in the game, as part of an educational project.
Mojang the creators and developers of Minecraft, teamed with the UN in 2012 to help them design cities in the developing world.
They created public spaces and shared the spaces with groups of community. The participants could then redesign them.
The project has spawned new ideas for green space in Kiberia, the largest slum in Nairobi and the tool was also used to design a new waterfront in Les Cayes, Haiti's third largest city.
The Adelaide competition ends on June 12, and the winner will be announced within a month.
