Valheim went live on Steam just five weeks ago, and it's been on fire ever since. Iron Gate's Viking survival game rocketed to the top of the charts, selling 5 million copies within a month of Early Access. It also beat Dota 2 in terms concurrent active players.
Steam reviews for Valheim exude a palpable sense of awe and relief. People often compare the experience to the first time they played Minecraft, marveling at the game's vastness as well as its depth and atmosphere and pondering how a team of just five developers managed to pack an immersive experience of this quality into a 1GB download. Valheim sets players loose in an original realm of Viking purgatory It's a vast, procedurally generated, world filled with mythical Norse beasts and high seas, hunting, and crafting. It's dense yet forgiving and action-packed, yet tranquil.

"We're doing our best," Iron Gate co-founder Henrik Tornqvist told Engadget. "It has been quite hectic since the launch."
Tornqvist and Richard Svensson, the studio founder, are planning to hire a few additional individuals to assist with the flood of bug reports coming from millions of beta testers. Minecraft Servers Coffee Stain Publishing, the developers behind Goat Simulator (a viral video game that is a real granddaddy) has backed the project.
As a side business, Svensson started working on Valheim in 2017. He and Tornqvist were co-workers at Swedish studio Pieces Interactive. But, Svensson left the company in order to focus on Valheim in 2018.
