Online Banking Apps, such as ANZ And Commonwealth Downin Outage

In the wake of an outage in the world internet banking has been affected by Australian banks.



On Thursday afternoon major banks like ANZ and Commonwealth Bank were displaying their websites to customers.



As a result of a global outage hitting apps and websites, internet banking for Australian banks has been affected



Users reported that Westpac and Bank of Melbourne were also not available, as were banks in New Zealand.



Customers were informed via the ANZ app that "Something was wrong." We are available 24/7 to help you.



A message on the ANZ app said to customers"Sorry, there was something wrong. If you need assistance contact us anytime'



Some ATMs were also being reported to be out of commission too and reports of machines in stores not working during the outage.



The crash is believed to be caused by an issue at Akamai the world's largest platform for content delivery that supplies the foundation of major online services.



A few ATMs were reported as out of service too and reports of in-store machines also malfunctioning during the outage.



Data from downdetector.com.au showed the extent of the downtime. It affected all major banks and blue-chip firms like Telstra, Optus, and many others.



Amazon, Minecraft, Australia Post and the NBN website were also among the victims of the crash, as per the website.



Services started to return to normal around 3.35pm on Thursday, approximately 90 minutes after initial reports of issues.

However Virgin Australia's website remained down despite the return of other websites.



Peakhour.io, an Australian CDN company, has stated that the latest outage affecting these large companies highlights the fact that any network can fail.

"People who visit a site will get it from their closest cache. This makes the website appear faster and more responsive by eliminating performance limitations like distance and bandwidth.



CDNs can also enhance the reliability of websites. Users are unlikely to notice that a website is down, so long as the caches are functional.



"Many CDN providers also provide cyber security services too blocking attack traffic close to where it originates, long before it gets anywhere near the target.'



However, hackers are often able to bring websites and applications down by a technique called DDOS - distributed denial of service. In this, they orchestrate a massive increase of traffic at certain weak points within a network in a bid to overload it.



He added, "Akamai is a venerable and well-respected company however, as we've witnessed two times in the past week, outages are a possibility for anyone.



"The fact that a number of large organizations and the crucial services they offer across Australia could be affected simultaneously, regardless of the reason, is a sign that there is a dire need to redeploy.



'Companies that send their traffic through a third-party or a CDN or DDOS protection, all require a Plan A, just like any other crucial component of their IT infrastructure.
