Ask Massively: Giveaways, Zombies, and Capturing the Spirit of Ultima Online

This week in Ask Massively, we're answering questions about eerily quiet games, giveaways, and capturing the spirit of classic sandboxes and The Walking Dead.



Holden asked, "Why has Perpetuum dropped off the map? I haven't heard of it anymore. It's only when look for wallpapers of robots and mechs on my desktops that I think of it. It was such a great question that we scoured the internet for an answer before adding it to Ask Massively. It's been a long time since we'd reported on Perpetuum because it had been an extended time since Perpetuum was making a major announcement in the media. Many speculated that the game's playerbase has shrunk over the last two years, but in fact during the winter holidays the developer Avatar Creations posted a dev blog that detailed plans for a tutorial for newbies island intended to bolster the number of new players. It all depends on what you think you are getting from the spirit of the original Ultima Online! If you mean the spirit of lawlessness, of red-named murderers roaming the countryside, or that heart-pumping feeling when you spot someone at the edge of your screen who could be an enemy as well as a friend, then Darkfall, Mortal Online, or EVE Online may be the right choice for you. You could even try modern Ultima Online on the Siege Perilous shard for an even-more-hardcore-than-old-school experience.



If you are looking for the spirit of an open world with a heavy focus on crafting, housing economics, and exploration, then you have a lot of options with isometric games like RuneScape, Eldevin, and Ashen Empires. Ryzom and Wurm Online, though not isometric, are nevertheless crafter/explorer paradises with that old-school sandbox feel.



If it's the nostalgia of Britannia you're looking for, then take an in-depth look at Richard Garriott's upcoming sandbox, Shroud of the Avatar. While it's not Ultima Online, it has Lord British's signature. Keep in mind new indie games coming out, like The Repopulation and Life is Feudal All of them claim to be heavily influenced by the granddaddy sandbox.



Joseph also wrote, Can you recommend an MMORPG that is out or in development that will capture the experience of being in The Walking Dead? Preferably a sandbox style crafting or survival game?



Brainssssss! Although it's not an MMO, State of Decay is definitely in the top spot among survival sandboxes suggested by my informal Massively team poll. DayZ, Infestation: Survivor Stories and the forthcoming Nether also made our short list, which is an awful amount of zombie games in my opinion. You can always try Die2Nite which is a game with less photorealism and more psychological gameplay and survival planning. Massively's Beau has also mentioned a few other games that aren't widely known in an article about our top undead.



I'm sure that the Massively players can add to my list. What UO replicas and zombie MMOs would you recommend to Joseph?
