Minecraft Player Spends two Years Building a Virtual City

Minecraft player works for two years creating a virtual city By Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

17 October 2014

A student from Delaware has spent two years creating the virtual world he named Titan City in the video game Minecraft.

Titan City is made up of 4.5 million Minecraft building blocks and contains 96 buildings.

Duncan Parcells claims it took him two years to build and that he spends up to five hours per week on the project.

The first building he built was a virtual model of the World Trade Center, which took 18 months to complete.

The 19-year-old believes Titan City is not a real New York model.

"It's inspired by New York," he said to the BBC.

"A lot of people believe that it's a pastime, but it isn't."

The city was originally built with the Xbox 360 version, but he has since switched it to the PC version, which he claims offers more construction possibilities.

Mr Parcells plans on adding an airport and a sports arena.

He said, "I suppose it's an outlet to architecture and energy."

"I've always liked architecture. I'm particularly proud of the more traditional buildings, and the more art deco, Victorian-style builds.

"A majority of people come in and are looking to explore the area or help with the construction." Many of them assist with the roads."

Although Titan City has been welcomed online with open arms, Mr. Parcells said that he has kept his virtual world apart from his actual life.

"I've kept it under wraps, it's kind of like an additional life I'm not talking about, but people are starting to find out," he said.

"My parents believe it's cool. I'm guessing they're just happy I don't play it so often."

Microsoft recently announced that it would purchase Minecraft studio Mojang in a deal of $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

Markus Persson, aka Notch announced that the game had surpassed 100 million players in February 2014.

After purchasing the game for the first time, the game Minecraft is free to play however there are in-game purchases that can be purchased.

The game is played in a virtual world comprised of cubes of different materials. Most of them are able to be used as building blocks, and a few of them can be transformed into usable raw materials (wood, iron, diamond and so on.).

The game requires players to survive using blocks to construct shelters and to turn raw materials and combinations thereof into objects (swords and bows, armor and bows, etc.) to defeat the many monsters in the game.
