A new version of Minecraft designed for classroom use is now available in early access. Minecraft: Education Edition was announced back in January with the acquisition by Microsoft of MinecraftEdu, a team that had already been tweaking the game for teachers. The new version is available for free this summer until a per-student pricing system is introduced for the academic year. Microsoft has provided MinecraftEdu customers a year's free access to Education Edition as a thank you. The offer will likely start after the trial ends.
Education Edition has some advantages over the standard version of Minecraft. From the beginning, up to 30 students can learn and collaborate in the same world, negating the need to establish a private server through an application such as Minecraft Realms. Teachers can create non-player characters (NPCs) to create a more guided experience, and provide them with web links so that students can access additional resources. There's also a chalkboard for providing instructions and cameras that students can use to take snapshots of their work and create an in-game portfolio as they go along.
Microsoft claims it is still working on a host of other features that users have demanded. The new interface provides teachers with an interactive map with markers for each student and the ability to teleport users (should someone wander off or make a mistake) and a chat area to manage class-wide and private conversations. Minecraft has already proven itself to be a highly effective educational tool, teaching the arts, geology, and coding -- with an official version for schools its potential and success are bound to grow.
