Minecraft Game Adds Ordnance Survey GB Terrain Data

Minecraft game includes Ordnance Survey GB terrain data By Matthew Wall Technology reporter, BBC News

23 September 2013

Minecraft, the cult video game of building and creating monsters, now allows you to incorporate Ordnance Survey terrain data from Great Britain into your blockwork virtual world.

The game's 33,000,000 players can create worlds over geographically accurate landscapes covering 224,000 km (86,000 miles) of Britain.

Joseph Braybrook, an intern with OS's Innovation Labs, created the GB Minecraft world in just two weeks.

It uses OS OpenData products for free.

"We believe we might have created the biggest Minecraft world ever constructed based on real-world data," Graham Dunlop, OS Innovation Lab Manager.

"The resultant map demonstrates the huge potential, not just for using Minecraft for the purposes of geography and computer technology in schools, but also the huge scope of applications available for OS OpenData too."

Minecraft was created in 2009 by Swede Markus "Notch" The game is a virtual world made up cubes of different materials such as sand, rock and lava.

Players can collaborate to construct shelters, create items from raw materials and fight off various monsters.

The OS GB world contains more than 22 billion Minecraft blocks.

After downloading the map to Minecraft and then logged in, they can enter the 3D virtual world through OS's headquarters in Southampton and can recreate real-life features such as Stonehenge, or imagined buildings like Hogwarts castle.

The OS map products include OS Terrain 50 and OS VectorMap together to create a 3D representation of the earth's surface that is layered with features such as roads, woodland, and water.

You can build your own structures using the top.

OS is the country's main mapping authority. Mcprofile Its maps cover the mainland and the islands surrounding it, but not Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man or Channel Islands.
