Valheim went live on Steam just five weeks ago, and it's been ablaze ever since. Iron Gate's Viking survival sim soared to the top of the charts, hitting 5 million copies sold after just one month of Early Access and surpassing huge games like Dota 2 in terms of active players concurrently.
Steam reviews for Valheim convey a tangible feeling of awe and satisfaction. Players regularly compare the feeling to the first time they played Minecraft, marveling at the game's size as well as its depth and atmosphere and wondering the way a team of five developers could pack this immersive experience into a 1GB download. Valheim lets players explore a unique realm of Viking purgatory. This world is created procedurally and filled with mythical Norse creatures as well as high seas hunts, crafting, and more. Iron Gate has sold more that 5.7 million copies to date in Valheim. The team behind the development currently comprises five members. Tornqvist and Richard Svensson, the studio founder, are planning to hire a few more individuals to assist with the flood of bug reports that are coming from the thousands of beta testers. Coffee Stain Publishing, the creators of Goat Simulator (a viral video game that is truly a granddaddy) has backed the project.
As a side business, Svensson started working on Valheim in 2017. At the time, he and Tornqvist were colleagues at Swedish studio Pieces Interactive, but by the end of 2018, Svensson was able to concentrate fully on Valheim.
