Microsoft is Bringing 'Minecraft' to The Oculus Rift

Minecraft is a delightful and hugely successful game but nobody would suggest its success is based on real-world accuracy. Minecraft servers The game's graphically squishy graphics are brimming with sharp right angles and massive "pixels", they still possess a lot of appeal and a distinctive style of visual. It is clear that Minecraft's vast open-world nature makes it an ideal game for virtual reality. Microsoft has already demonstrated the game with HoloLens and it is now available for Oculus Rift. At Microsoft's spring event, I was able to play the game using the Rift. In spite of its sluggish design, it could be one of the best VR experiences.

For starters, it's worth noting that this isn't a brand new version of Minecraft It's just been updated to work with the Oculus Rift. You can play in survival mode or join one of the many multiplayer servers. When you begin playing, you're presented with two different views. The first one puts you in an imaginary castle, with the game running on an LCD screen in front of you. It's quite a meta- and hilarious to play games within a virtual reality game. However, it's an excellent way to observe things when you need to take a break from the full VR experience.

You can plunge into the full experience and feel fully immersed in what your character sees. Because of the massive scope of Minecraft's vast 3D environments it truly feels like you've been taken away from reality, despite the humongous pixels and the absence of fine detail. It's one of the best and more immersive VR experiences I've had thus far. Minecraft's success is due to its lack of the fine details. It doesn't attempt to replicate the real world. It felt more like I was in an animated cartoon.

Microsoft's demo experience shows a few of the most memorable moments of the game. I did some mining and fought some creeps, illuminated caves with torchlights, pressed several buttons to interact and finally took a minecart to the side of a massive building. This was my favorite part of demo. I felt as if I was flying high and fast. A subsequent mine cart ride let me take a 360-degree look at the vast landscape from way up high as it travelled toward a new area and there was a myriad of entertainment and visual delights to take in on the trip.

It's difficult to describe the experience in words since VR is so immersive. It's a less radically different version of the game than the HoloLens experience, mainly because the Oculus version doesn't include gestures and voice commands, however it still seems like an ideal place for exploring. While there's no specific date for when Minecraft will be made available in VR It is expected that it won't be too long after the Rift's launch later this month. While "killer app" may sound like a cliché, Minecraft has the potential of being a major player in the emerging VR scene.
