One of the things you need to do to become a successful NL Hold'em poker player is learn how to bet. Sounds easy right? Everybody has heard that you should bet more than check and raise more than call, etc etc. But, too often players will bet without having a reason for betting. There should be a reaction that you hope to get from your opponent(s) by betting and your betting should convey something to them, be it true or false. If your bets do not fall into these categories, then you are making them in the wrong places for the wrong reasons.

A continuation bet is a bet you place on the flop after making a raise before the flop. It doesn't have to be a bet with a real hand. It's just any bet you make after a preflop raise. The term has a connotation that associates it with bluffing because most hands with which you raise miss the flop completely. In other words, most continuation bets are bluffs.

poker betting strategy One note of caution however. If and when people do call your "opener" raise you can put them on a long suit hand. Or at least you'll know ipso facto they are an aggressive player and you need to proceed with caution.

Then what you'll want to do is take this knowledge to the real table. In no limit Texas hold em and any poker game, you want to play the man, not the hand. Keep a close eye on your opponents reactions when they look at their cards. If you play enough, you'll soon be able to read when your opponents have good hands and when they're just trying to fool you just by picking up on their idiosyncrasies.
