The Avanos Medical Cortrak*2 Ental Access System was created to aid trained health professionals with the placement of medically-approved feeding tubes in patients' small intestines or stomachs. However, since 2015, there has been 23 deaths linked to the feeding tube.
There have been many reports of injuries to patients and deaths following misplacement or misalignment of nasogastric, or nasal, or nasoenteric tube. They are used to aid in their placement.
This recall is being utilized to make changes to the device’s labeling and instructions to use. The users are advised to confirm that the tube is placed in accordance with the specifications of their establishment prior to using it to deliver nutrition.
Patient's vocal cords, lungs and the trachea can be damaged in the event that the nasogastric/nasoenteric placed incorrectly. Avanos Mediacal Cortrak 2 This could result in severe injury, or even death.
Avanos Medical's recall communication stated that there have been sixty incidents, 23 deaths, and 58 patients injured due to the incorrect placement of Nasogastric tubes. The CORTRAK*2 enteral access system has been used since 2015. There were several adverse events, including respiratory failure, pneumothorax (collapsed lungs), perforation (a gap or opening in the wall of the esophagus or bowel), pneumonia, and pleural effusion (excess liquid in the space between your lungs and chest cavity).
Avanos Medical sent a field correction notice on March 21st 2022 to all customers who used the devices between January 2021 and January 2022. The notice included the following information:
