If you keep an eye on the App Store (or have an RSS feed following it), you might have noticed an app called Minecrafted there on Monday morning. It's an Minecraft client for iOS which is a version of the wildly popular indie game that is able to played on an iPhone and also connect to real Minecraft servers. But before you run to download it, it's not that fast -- the app has been removed from the App Store already, and if you try to download it from the US store, you'll be presented with an error message.
What's the matter? TUAW contacted Trevor Wilkin, the app's creator. He explained that his original idea was for the app to be developed, submitted to Apple and then approved by Minecraft before it was made live. MINECRAFT SERVERS Apple made it available immediately, however Wilkin says he was "pretty terrified and took the app from sale in the quickest time I could." He's not sure if the application is genuine since it's completely original code as per the description. However, presumably the developer reverse engineered certain elements to make it compatible with current servers or versions of the game.
To us, Wilkin sounds innocent enough. He says Wilkin has "no desire to hurt the brand and only wanted to present an efficient tool. I still hope to work out an official solution that doesn't step on anyone's toes." We hope that too. having Minecraft running on a regular basis on iOS is a great benefit for iPhone owners and fans of the immensely popular game.
