PROJECTIONS: translations of 3d real world coordinates onto 2d surface
-families of projections: planar, cylindrical, and conic
-standard lines: points at which the earth's surface touch the developable surface, the points on the map located along the standard line lack distortion of any kind, the further you move away from the line, the more the distortion there will be.
-there are a lot of different projections for different mapping purposes.
TYPES OF DISTORTION
-equivalent: preserves area, distorts shape
-conformal: preserves shape, distorts area
-compromise projections are in between
THE MERCATOR PROJECTION
-constant direction
-online map providers use a web Mercator projection
- the shapes look really well, but the area is super distorted
LAMBERT CONFORMAL CONIC
-used for mapping the US, and other east-west trending areas
-two areas of no distortion
TRANSVERSE MERCATOR
-used to map north-south trending areas
AZIMUTHAL POLAR EQUIDISTANT
- used for mapping the poles
-very accurate at poles
-everything else is very distorted
