We were best friends for two years, before we realized we had feelings for each other. I wanted to be with her. But for some reason, she did not think our relationship would work and said she wanted to remain friends. I was heartbroken, because I really liked her and thought we could have a shot at a great future together.
After she said she wants to be friends only, I debated in my head for some time, if I would be able to get over my feelings for her. There were huge wars in my head - if I should break off all contact with her or stay friends with her. It took me a long time to get over my feelings, and what helped me during that time was my firm belief in our friendship. She was my best friend, and still IS. Nothing makes me happier than sharing something with her - be it happiness, sadness, a joke, my thoughts or a food.
I admit it was extremely hard to reach the state of mind I am in as of today, but I'm glad that I took the effort to keep her in my life. I would have definitely regretted it if I had chosen to not stay friends with her.
So the pros are - You get to be friends with someone who genuinely cares about me and makes you happy.
Cons - The cons are valid only for a period of time right after you are rejected. That is the time when you will feel like there is nothing right in this world and you will feel down. Trust me, this feeling will pass and you will realize the importance of your friend.
Finally, the question of staying friends or not also depends on the strength of your friendship. It also depends on whether you feel this person is important enough to keep in your life, irrespective of whether they have caused you pain and sadness through their rejection of your proposal.
