Most transactions happen within the limits of a given block and its preceding blocks. A block must fit within a rigid definition of size and can be up to 1 megabyte long (or 1,000 blocks by this size limit). To find the smallest number of bytes that can be stored in a block, there are four possibilities as shown on the right, which have a total of 1,107 bytes. It is the first decentralized peer-to-peer payment system to eliminate intermediary actors and enable cash transactions to be sent directly from sender to recipient. In addition to eliminating the need for trusted third-party payment processors, digital currencies provide better privacy than traditional payment systems. At the time of writing, the total market cap of all cryptocurrencies is $118 billion.

2011

A 2011 paper by Sergio Lerner and Roberto Verni proposed using blockchain to create a "self-enforcing digital contract". The self-enforcing property is built into the system; enforcement is automatic, rather than requiring courts and police. The authors illustrated how such a system could work as an alternative to current legal procedures. A related idea involves not only recording such information on a blockchain, but making the recorded information computationally verifiable.

2013
The first recorded exchange of bitcoins for traditional currencies took place in May 2013. The buyer used bitcoin to buy 25 Raspberry Pi computers from the distributor.

2016 - 2017
BitPay, a company that allows merchants to accept bitcoin payments for their products and services, raised $25.5 million in a Series B funding round led by Daimler.
