Indigenous people are overrepresented among homeless populations worldwide and urban Indigenous homelessness is on the rise. In Canada, Indigenous people are five times more prevalent among the homeless compared with the general population. Longstanding structural unjustness associated with colonization (e.g., The Indian Act, Residential Schools, Marginalization and Systemic Racism) are commonly noted as contributors to the Indigenous homelessness. However, the effects of colonial policies, including disconnection from the community, culture, and lands are experienced differently by Indigenous men and women, and these gendered perspectives have received little attention from researchers.

Being able to look after Aboriginal people when they're mentally ill means that you need to be able to understand the culture that they come from that means having done enough study to understand that Aboriginal people all over the continent are from different countries, different languages, different cultures, and you can't generalize about them, it's also true that mind, body and spirits speak as one, in a healthy person, particularly in an Indigenous healthy person. For example, the book I’m reading “Through Black Spruce'', shows that the main male character suffers through mental health problems and refuses to get help, but realizes that going for drugs and alcohol isn’t the answer and he proceeds to ask for help.

There have been countless cases of Indigenous women in Canada who experienced police brutality or were sexually assaulted while in police custody. For example, in my story, the female main character has experienced sexual and physical violence where as the male main character has experienced only physical violence. However, when these women report cases of assault, they are often mocked and the perpetrator is almost never found guilty. Indigenous women are almost three times more likely than non-Aboriginal women to be violently victimized (sexual and physical assault, and robbery with a weapon or threat of violence), regardless of whether it occurred by strangers or acquaintances, or within a marital/common-law relationship.

The study found that separated Indigenous parents were younger, poorer, had younger children at the time of separation and were far more likely to be in a cohabiting rather than a married relationship at the time of separation. There is also a limited literature in the interaction of Indigenous families with the family law system. However, parenting after separation for Indigenous families are free? The purpose of this course is to provide information to parents, guardians and other family members who are dealing with the family issue as a result of separation or divorcee. Issues might include guardianship, parenting arrangements, contact, child support and spousal support.

The non-indigenous people understanding the way spirituality and culture affects the well-being and the mind, it can be a bit of a struggle because those sorts of concepts aren't necessarily explained in psychiatry and psychology. It's not about a sense of me, it's about a sense of me in the context of the 'we', of the whole and appreciating that we are who we are because of where they come from and what we do in this life is important for what comes next and those connections to country, those connections to people and those connections over time and not they need to be rebuilt or nurtured in a way that isn't necessarily done by medications or I guess, traditional psycho psychotherapy and those sorts of things, it's not that they're not useful, it's just that to properly deal with the issues of social, emotional well-being. There needs to be, once again, a more comprehensive overview and a more comprehensive approach to dealing with these issues.
